Wisdom Tooth Extractions
The wisdom teeth are also known as the third molars, and they erupt at the back of the mouth, usually when a person is in their late teens or early adulthood. Most people, however, do not have enough room in their mouth to accommodate these extra teeth. At Manhattan Beach Dental Solutions, we perform wisdom tooth extractions to prevent our patients from developing pain, infection, or misalignment caused by wisdom teeth.
Emergency wisdom tooth extraction
Ideally, you see your Manhattan Beach dentist every six months for your routine cleaning and dental exam, making it easy to keep up with the development and potential eruption of your wisdom teeth. The best practice is to have wisdom teeth extracted before they can cause any oral health problems.
Here are some facts to know:
- Impacted wisdom teeth do not always break through the gums.
- A wisdom tooth that does erupt through the gum is called a partially impacted wisdom tooth.
- Symptoms of an impacted or partially impacted wisdom tooth can include swelling, jaw pain, stiffness, sensitivity, and infection.
It is important to let your dentist know immediately of any discomfort, irritation, or pain in between dental visits. These could be indications that your wisdom teeth are on the move and need to be extracted right away before they causing any damage.
Complications caused by wisdom teeth
In many cases, wisdom teeth that break through the gums do so incorrectly. There simply isn’t enough room in a person’s mouth for these additional teeth, so an impacted wisdom tooth will likely erupt at an angle, which can be very painful.
Impacted wisdom teeth could damage your oral health in many ways, including:
- Bite misalignment
- Tooth damage
- Jaw damage
Wisdom teeth are the only teeth that do not need to be replaced. Any other tooth loss or extraction should be followed by a dental restoration to prevent serious oral health problems or an altered appearance and to maintain the integrity of your smile and oral health.
How wisdom teeth are removed
Wisdom teeth are typically extracted when the patient is under anesthesia. The type of anesthesia needed and where the extraction takes place – dentist’s office, outpatient clinic, or hospital – will depend on how complex the patient’s case is, as well as the patient’s level of anxiety about the procedure.
- An incision is made in the gum tissue to expose the tooth and bone.
- Bone that blocks access to the tooth root is removed, in pieces if necessary.
- Site is cleaned of debris.
- Stitches are placed to close the wound.
- Gauze is used to control bleeding and help with the formation of a blood clot.
Wisdom tooth extractions require that the patient be accompanied by someone who can escort them home safely from their appointment. Before leaving, you will be given detailed instructions about recovery, healing, and care, and what to do to address possible side effects like bleeding, swelling, and bruising. Recommendations for pain management, information regarding eating and drinking, and cleaning instructions will all be provided.
There is always a period of downtime following extraction to allow for healing. Your Manhattan Beach dentist will let you know when you can resume normal activity.
