LAPIP Laser Peri-Implantitis Treatment
Unveiling implant complications: Safeguarding your new smile with laser-assisted therapy (LAPIP)
Lasers and other technologies are an important part of Manhattan Beach Dental Solutions. While no technology is a substitute for top talent, state-of-the-art dental devices and systems help our talented professionals in Manhattan Beach, California, to better care for patients. As true partners in our patients’ health, we can utilize lasers to rescue failing implants. This process is known as the Laser Assisted Perio Implant Procedure, or LAPIP.
What is LAPIP?
LAPIP is the first laser treatment of its kind cleared by the FDA to resolve complications associated with dental implants. These complications can lead to the failure of the implant and the loss of the restored tooth.
What causes an implant to fail?
The American Academy of Implant Dentistry reports that implants have a 98% success rate. Yet, no treatment is without its risk of complications. While the artificial tooth structure of the crown, bridge, or denture does not decay like natural teeth, the implant itself can be susceptible to inflammation similar to gum disease. This inflammation progressively breaks down the tissues around the implant. LAPIP is designed to be a conservative, cost-effective way to treat peri-implant diseases potentially and, in doing so, to “save” or preserve the vulnerable implant.
How does LAPIP work?
The process involves introducing a very thin laser fiber to the treatment site. The laser’s energy works to eliminate diseased tissue and harmful bacteria. Like other laser-assisted procedures for soft tissues (gums) offered at our office, LAPIP is known for its precision and targeted approach. This feature allows us to effectively treat peri-implantitis in the most conservative, non-invasive, and low-risk way possible. Utmost healthy tissue is preserved as the areas outside the target site remain intact and untouched.
How does LAPIP compare to other procedures for failing implants?
Until LAPIP, options were limited to conventional surgical techniques. Patients appreciate having a laser-assisted option, partly because it does not trigger dental fear and anxiety. It does not require cutting tools or techniques like scalpels and sutures. Due to the light-touch nature of laser therapies, patients generally tolerate the procedure very well. It is associated with minimal discomfort, bleeding, and swelling. LAPIP also supports natural, efficient healing. It has been proven to treat infections, halt the progression of peri-implant disease, and regenerate tissue around the implant.
How do I know if I need LAPIP?
After you get your implant, Manhattan Beach Dental Solutions continues to partner with you to ensure it heals properly. We strive to keep your new teeth healthy, looking great, and functioning “as designed.” To achieve this, we monitor the condition of your implants during follow-up visits, routine hygiene appointments, or check-ups. It is also essential to contact your friends in Manhattan Beach, CA, ASAP if you notice any concerning changes.
Red flags for peri-implantitis include gums around the implant that look very red or inflamed. Alternatively, you may observe tender gums upon touching or bleeding during brushing or flossing – symptoms often linked to gum/periodontal disease.
